Nowroz 1397 lunch
31 March 2018.
Nowroz was a great success, raising over $10,000 for our work in Afghanistan. Thanks to everyone for your generosity. Here’s President, Sarina Greco’s welcome to Nowroz 1397 speech
Our lunch began with the traditional Nowroz 7-fruit and nut cup – Haft Mewa – which must be made with great care to ensure it brings good luck. Next we were treated to Bolani making by Sultan – one of the wonderful chefs from the Afghan Restaurant in Brunswick. We watched as these flatbread turnovers stuffed with a leek mix were cooked and passed around – quite delicious!
What followed was an Afghan feast of chicken kebabs, a spinach & pine nuts dish – Sabri, Lamb Korma, rice with cumin – Chalaw, salad and Nowroz biscuits which must be made 3 days before using rice flour, butter, sugar and cardamom.
Sarina made a delicious sweet to follow and by popular request, here is the recipe: Persian Love Cake
The children drew the many winning raffle tickets, packets of Afghan spice and Chicken Biriani recipes were sold, gorgeous jewellery and embroidery made by Afghan women were snapped up and lots of conversation had.
